From the Floor to the Forefront: Your Warehouse Career Path

Posted on 20 Feb 2026

The warehousing and logistics sector is one of Ireland's fastest-growing industries, offering genuine long-term career opportunities for those willing to invest in their skills. Whether you're just starting out or looking to level up, understanding the career ladder — and the training that powers each rung — can help you make smart moves. At AER Temp, we place candidates at every stage of this journey, giving you the flexibility and exposure to build a career on your terms.

Stage 1: General Warehouse Operative

Every warehouse career begins on the floor. As a General Operative, you'll handle goods receiving, picking, packing, and basic stock management. No formal qualifications are required to start, but completing a Manual Handling certificate — a mandatory requirement for most warehouse roles — sets you apart from day one. Many sites also require a Safe Pass card for health and safety awareness. AER Temp regularly places operatives into roles across Dublin and surrounding counties, giving candidates immediate, paid experience with leading logistics companies.

Stage 2: Forklift Operator / Materials Handler

With experience under your belt, the next step is often gaining certified equipment qualifications. Counterbalance and reach truck licences, issued through RTITB or FÁS/SOLAS-approved training bodies, are among the most in-demand credentials in the industry. Bendi and VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) licences further expand earning potential. These certifications typically take between one and five days and must be renewed every three to five years. AER Temp operatives who hold these qualifications consistently access higher-paid shifts and longer-term placements.

Stage 3: Team Lead / Senior Operative

Experienced operatives who demonstrate reliability and communication skills often move into team lead roles, supervising small groups, managing shift handovers, and supporting stock-takes. At this stage, a QQI Level 5 in Logistics or Supply Chain Management is a valuable differentiator, as is First Aid certification (PHECC or equivalent). Many employers also look for experience with WMS (Warehouse Management Systems) such as SAP or Manhattan. AER Temp helps candidates at this stage gain exposure across multiple sites, broadening their operational knowledge rapidly.

Stage 4: Warehouse Supervisor / Shift Manager

Supervisors are responsible for full shift operations, KPI reporting, people management, and health and safety compliance. A QQI Level 6 in Supervisory Management or a FETAC qualification in Transport & Logistics strengthens applications at this level. Many supervisors also pursue IOSH Managing Safely as a standard requirement. Candidates who have worked through AER Temp often find that the variety of environments they've experienced makes them stronger hires at this level.

Stage 5: Warehouse Manager / Operations Manager

At the top of the warehouse career path, managers oversee full site operations, budgets, staffing, and strategic planning. Relevant degrees in Supply Chain, Business, or Logistics are common, alongside professional memberships such as CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport). Continuous professional development through bodies like CILT Ireland helps managers stay current with automation and industry best practice.
